Hepcidin, a hormone regulating iron metabolism, fluctuates during the menstrual cycle due to changes in estrogen and progesterone levels. During the follicular phase, hepcidin is low, promoting iron absorption. In the luteal phase, hepcidin is high, conserving iron. These fluctuations prevent iron deficiency and maintain iron balance. Understanding this relationship is crucial for iron management in women.
